14 Children released from Bangle industry in North Delhi

Delhi: In a joint raid, conducted by Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Child Line and Prayas in Jahangir Puri area of Delhi, 14 child labourers were rescued from a Bangle industry. The rescue operation was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mr. Rajinder Gupta, accompanied by police, members of Labour Department and Bachpan Bachao Andolan and other NGOs.
All the children are between 6-15 years of age and most of the rescued children belong to villages of Bihar, Working for a period of 6 -10 months. The children were working in extremely unhealthy conditions and were involved in hazardous activities at work. They usually used to work 14-18 hours a day.
6 year old Manish (name changed) said, “I work from 9 am in the morning till 11 pm in the night without a break. Although I was promised a monthly salary of Rs. 3000, I have not been paid anything till now.”
10 year old Raju (name changed) said, “I came to visit Delhi a few months back with my father but I was made to work in this factory against my wish. I do not want to work and want to go to the school.”
Mr. R.S. Chaurasia, chairperson, Bachpan Bachao Andolan said, “Children in large numbers are working in organized industrial sectors in Delhi. We welcome the orders of the High Court for prosecution of employers and recovery of back wages for the children.”
