18 Children released from Paper industry and Hotel dhabas in Central Delhi; 6 employers arrested

Delhi: In a raid conducted on belalf of Bachpan Bachao Andolan and other NGOs on today in Central district of Delhi, 18 child labourers were rescued from Hotel dhabas,ring chain and paper making industry. The rescue operation was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate,D.B Gupta road,Mr. Pawan Kamra, accompanied by police, members of Labour Department,activists of Bachpan Bachao Andolan(BBA) and other NGOs.
BBA has made a thorough investigation on the information and received that a large number of children had been trafficked and enslaved into these hazardous industry of this area. BBA and partner NGOs then lodged a formal complaint to the local authorities and co-ordinated with the official task-force on child labour.
All the children were between 10-14 years of age and most of the rescued children belong to villages of UP, Bihar and Assam states of India, All children belong to poor families and have been trafficked by the agent at different time.Working for a period of 1-2 years, the children were involved in hazardous work and worked for more than 12-15 hours a day. They were getting a meager amount of Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 a week for their service.
Mr. R.S. Chaurasia, Chairperson of Bachpan Bachao Andolan said, “Children in large numbers are still being trafficked from UP and Bihar to other states for work. The way these children are being hired from hazardous occupations, it goes to show that the employers are not afraid of Child Labour or Bonded Labour Act. Labour Department is mainly responsible for this as they are not implementing the directions of the High Court in releasing arrear wages to the children and Rs. 20,000 as compensation from the employers.”
